This project provides a historic Chicago neighborhood with a critical stepping stone for pollinators and absorbs rainwater runoff.

This design replaced over 500 sf of concrete with new natural stone paving set on a permeable base to address ongoing back patio flooding issues. The planting design for the parkway incorporates a matrix of native sedges, 500 spring bulbs, Coreopsis verticillata (Tickseed), and Aesclepias tuberosa (Butterfly Weed). Other highlights include native Camassia bulbs in the front patio and a row of Panicum virgatum ‘Northwind’ (Northwind Switch Grass), which helps screen the front room of the home from the nearby sidewalk. The planting design was generated using original Hinterlands algorithms created using the visual scripting software Grasshopper.
