First Place Network Reset: Rethinking the Chicago Emerald Necklace
International Design Competition
Emerald Constellation is a long term strategy employing landscape as a framework to reconceive the city as a network of overlapping and intersecting cultural, economic, and ecological flows.
This flexible and open-ended system is a 21st Century version of the Emerald Necklace accommodates immediate cultural and ecological programs and anticipates unforeseen events. This is achieved by reconditioning abandoned swathes of industrial property and associated connective infrastructure such as rails and canals for new uses. This proposal presupposes that open space, land uses, and ecological integrity are constantly fluctuating and best considered as a system of geographically and historically specific gradients.
